The Nantes-Brest Canal
The Nantes-Brest Canal is very close and it's highest point runs through the village of Glomel. Indeed the lake at Glomel was built to service the canal where it splits into two. The Tow paths are ideal for walks and cycle rides. There are many other cycle and walking trails, ranging from the gentle to the very challenging, criss-crossing the region. This meandering chain of waterways runs from Finistère to the Loire, interweaving rivers with stretches of canal built at Napoléon's instigation to bypass the belligerent English fleets off the coast. Finally completed in 1836, it came into its own at the end of the century as a coal, slate and fertilizer route. The building of the dam at Lac Guerlédan in the 1920s chopped the canal in two, leaving a whole section unnavigable by barge. Road transport had already superseded water haulage; now tourism is breathing life back into the canal.
Lac de Corong
Just a short walk away from the house, the lake offers fishing, swimming and boating for non-motorised craft. There is a man-made beach and tennis court. Several woodland walks can be taken around the shore line. It is a very peaceful and relaxing setting and ideal for picnics. Canoes are available for hire, including all the gear you need. Fishing is also permitted. There is a man made beach on the side of the lake, ideal for sunbathing or just relaxing in the tranquillity of the beautiful, peaceful surrounds of the lake.
Lac de Guerlédan
Located in the heart of Brittany, the Country of Guerlédan and Corong synthesizes all that makes the charm and the mystery of this land of legends. It owes its name to the two water levels from which it extends: the Lake Guerlédan (400 ha) and the Lake of Corong (76 ha) connected by the canal from Nantes to Brest. Forests, woods, gorges, valleys, and moors harmonize its landscape. On these remarkable sites, you will be able to devote yourselves to an array of activities, some restful, some more energetic.
Huelgoat
Huelgoat is the definitive scenic Breton village. One of its main features is the spectacular gorges that lead away from the lake. A boulder-strewn river flows through ancient oak woodlands. The area also has Menhirs, a Trembling stone, and "Le Champignon" (one of the many bizarre natural rock formations).
Rostrenen
Only 10 minutes drive from your Brittany Bed and Breakfast, Rostrenen is a very pleasant market town which offers a larger selection of shops, bars, restaurants and supermarkets as well as a Tourist centre. Tuesday is market day in Rostrenen.
Carhaix
Carhaix is a larger town approximately 15 minutes drive away. Here you can find the Hospital, Railway Station, Cinema, Vets, more shopping, restaurants, and supermarkets. Market Day in Carhaix is on Saturday. It has an indoor Swimming pool with water chutes and indoor/outdoor Tennis courts. There is also a very modern indoor go-cart traack and 10 pin bowling alley. Carhaix also has an excellent tourist office which also houses a small local museum.
